About the Emerald:
First mined in Egypt as early as 330 BC, Queen Cleopatra is said to have been obsessed with emeralds – even going to the extent of claiming ownership of all the mines in Egypt that produced them.
Like Aquamarine, an emerald belongs to the mineral family of beryl with a colour range from a light green to a much deeper, rich green. The darker the colour, the more valuable the emerald.
It’s also one of the reasons why most emeralds are heat treated – to enhance, darken their colour. However, very often the colour of emeralds used in jewellery depends on the quality and precision of the cut given to it by the gemologist. The most sought-after emeralds are an intense blue-green colour that is not easy to find.
Though the availability of high-quality emeralds is limited, this gemstone is mined in countries including Zambia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Colombia. Some estimates state that the oldest emeralds date back approximately 2.97 bn years.
Like most gemstones there are several beliefs of mystic and healing associated with this green gem. Some believed they could cure stomach ailments, stop bleeding and control epileptic fits.
Emeralds are also supposed to ensure loyalty and domestic bliss among married couples. They are said to keep partnerships on an even keel and change colour if things go amiss. As per ancient Vedic beliefs, an emerald is associated with the heart chakra and is said to have a soothing effect on both the emotions and the heart itself.
They are said to ensure physical, emotional and mental equilibrium, bringing harmony to all areas of one’s life. Raising consciousness, an emerald is believed to be able to bring in positive actions, eliminating negativity and enhancing the wearer’s ability to enjoy life to the fullest.
